U.S. Veteran

On December 6, 2011, Col. John R. Waite, Sr., AUS (Ret) “Jack”, 80 of Cherry Hill, NJ. Born in Millville, NJ and raised Erlton, Jack attended LaSalle College High School and was a 1949 graduate of Camden Catholic High School. After graduation he enrolled at LaSalle College. To help pay for school, he worked for Whitman’s Chocolates in Philadelphia, one of his favorite jobs. In 1952, he took a temporary leave from LaSalle and enlisted in the US Army. A year later, he was commissioned is as a 2nd Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers after graduating from Officers Candidate School at Ft Belvoir, VA.

After serving in Korea as part of United States Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea (KMAG), he continued his military career in the Army Reserve and returned to LaSalle to earn his degree in economics in 1957. Following graduation he spent almost 18 years as an agent with the US Treasury Department and later returned to active duty with the US Army serving as the reserve advisor to the Commandant at Ft. Belvoir. He was honorably discharged in 1985 after completing his distinguished career with a final tour at Ft. Dix, NJ. Jack was an active parishioner of the Catholic Church of St Mary in Cherry Hill serving as a Eucharistic Minister and in the parish choir.

Jack is lovingly survived by his wife Mary S. “Sandy” Waite (nee Beckett), his two children, John (Stephanie) Waite, Jr. of West Chester, PA and Heather (Allan) Johnston of Summit, NJ; his 4 grandchildren, Jack, Katharine, Tripp and Chase. Col. Waite was predeceased by his brothers, Frederick, Russell and Robert.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Thursday evening, December 8th, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the HEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 9 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights, NJ. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning, December 9th, beginning at 10:00 AM at the Catholic Church of St. Mary, 2001 Springdale Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003. Entombment Calvary Mausoleum, Cherry Hill, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Church at the address above or Camden Catholic High School, 300 Cuthbert Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002. There will not be a viewing Friday morning prior to Mass.
